Fire Prevention and Safety Education

School Program
The Iredell County Fire Marshal's Office does numerous Fire Education programs throughout the year for various age groups and affiliations. Our most structured Fire Education program is directed at the 4th graders in public and private schools in the county. Approximately 1500 kids are involved in this year's program. We meet with each 4th grade class for one hour each month throughout the school year.

Some of the topics covered in our lessons include: Stop, Drop, and Roll; E.D.I.T.H. (Exit Drills In The Home); Holiday Fire Safety; How to Report an Emergency; and the Chemistry of Fire.
We believe that it is very important to educate the children in such things as not making false calls to 911, and we also believe that our labor is paying off as the national average of false calls dropped 8.5% last year. This is just one example that makes us feel that it is important to spend time with our children. We think that a lesson learned as a child just might last a lifetime.

Fire Safety Bowl
The Fire Safety Bowl is a contest for 4th and 5th grade children to test their knowledge of fire safety. Each school can bring a team of 5 players and 1 teacher/coach to the competition to try to win money as well as the Fire Safety Bowl trophy for their school. Personal trophys are given to the first, second and third place teams. All the players and coaches also receive a Fire Safety Bowl T-shirt. The Fire Safety Bowl is co-sponsored by the ICFMO, the Statesville F.D., the Mooresville F.D. and the Iredell County Firefighters Association. The Fire Safety Bowl is an annual event, with the 2008 Fire Bowl being our 14th.

Fire Education House

The Fire Education House is a mobile replica of a house. It is specifically designed and equipped as a tool to demonstrate how to locate and remove fire hazards in the home and the proper way to escape a smoke filled room .

The "Fire House" is a joint effort of the Iredell County Fire Marshal's Office, Statesville Fire Marshal's Office, and the Iredell County Firefighter's Association and was funded through a grant provided by the Iredell County Partnership for Children.

Fire Safety Training

The ICFMO offers fire safety and fire extinguisher training on request. We will be glad to assist with any concerns/questions concerning evacuation, accountability of personnel, equipment needs, etc. We do a number of fire extinguisher classes annually and will be glad to assist with your training needs. Please feel free to contact us and we will be glad to assist.

Fire Suppression

The Fire Marshals Office also supports local fire departments in fire suppression. Due to the lack of manpower during the daytime due to the departments being mostly volunteer, we respond to most working structure fires and assist with either firefighting, pump operations, water supply or as needed. Most of the volunteer fire departments are now staffed during the daytime with part-time paid personnel.
