Health Education and Emergency Preparedness

Health Education and Emergency Preparedness is a multidisciplinary team, which promotes healthy lifestyles for children and adults through education and clinical services. Emergency Preparedness focuses on community education and preparedness to assist individuals and agencies with their emergency planning needs.


Clinical Health Education

Provides one-on-one education for health department clients to encourage healthy decisions and to connect clients with resources to achieve healthy lifestyles.

Community Health Education

Provides health or health-related education to Iredell County Residents.

  • Puberty education
  • Postponing Sexual Involvement Education
  • Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) and Contraception Education
  • Alcohol/Drugs/Tobacco Education
  • Testicular Self Exam Education
  • Breast Self Exam Education
  • Attend health fairs to promote Health Department services and healthy choices.
  • Assist businesses and organizations in facilitating health programs
  • Provide literature on various health topics
  • Monitor health status of the community
  • Responds to health concerns by individuals, groups or communities


Health Promotion

Provides nutrition education; promotes physical activity and tobacco education/prevention that supports environmental and policy changes in the community.

  • Eat Smart Move More Weigh Less is a weight management program that uses strategies proven to work
  • Families Eating Smart Moving More giving families the skills to be able to eat more meals at home, eat healthy when eating out, move more in their everyday routine and watch less television
  • Eating Smart Moving More in Faith Organizations
  • Smoking Cessation programs for adults and teens: Fresh Start (adults);
  • N-O-T Not on Tobacco (teens)
  • NAP SACC (Nutrition and Physical Activity Self Assessment for Child Care)  To assist Child Care Centers on making policy and environmental changes in the areas of providing nutritious foods and increasing physical activity
  • Smoke-Free Dining Campaign is a way to protect citizens from secondhand smoke by visibly promoting smoke-free opportunities to citizens
  • Winner’s Circle Healthy Dining Program is used to identify food establishments where healthy options are served


Vasectomy Referral Program

Educates and refers men for permanent birth control

  • Complete education and paperwork to arrange vasectomies for men based on a sliding fee scale determined by family size and income.

Emergency Preparedness

Provides educational and outreach information on how to prepare for biological, manmade and natural disasters.  Emergency Preparedness keeps the public informed on current health related issues such as pandemic flu, influenza outbreaks, and other communicable diseases.

  • Public Speaking
  • Public information on many diseases and outbreaks such as pandemic flu, anthrax, smallpox and other possible terrorist events.
  • Assists with emergency planning for healthcare agencies and businesses.
  • Provide information on emergency planning to the community.
