Iredell 2025 Community-Wide Strategic Plan

Introduction

Recognizing that Iredell County is experiencing explosive growth that is expected to continue, the County Commissioners initiated a community-wide strategic planning effort to develop a comprehensive strategic plan presenting a vision of Iredell County and a roadmap for achieving that future.

Since the beginning of the effort in August 2006, over seventy Iredell County residents, dedicated to a positive future for the County, have been working on the development of a plan to guide the County’s growth and success and to maintain and enhance the overall quality of life for County residents through the year 2025.  This plan is not a generalization of what could be done.  Rather, it is a guide with comprehensive goals and specific strategies that will enable the community to achieve a clearly defined central concept.

The results of this planning effort will be presented to the Iredell County Commission at their Agenda Meeting on December 19, 2006.

Vision and Mission

The group’s collective vision for Iredell County is that it should be a:

Prism of opportunity providing a gateway to all stages of life.

This reflects the community’s view that opportunity for enhanced quality of life should be provided to all citizens, regardless of their age, income, ethnic background, religion, or other characteristics.  With this as a vision, the Community’s mission is:

To be recognized as a leading county that provides exceptional opportunities and enhances the quality of life for all.

This mission will be achieved through a focus on common themes of collaboration among public and private sector entities, funding of critical needs, growth management, and effective communication, with a constant concern for the quality of life in Iredell County.

Goal Area Task Forces

Task Forces were established to consider seven distinct issues expected to impact the quality of life in Iredell County over the next nineteen years.  These Task Forces developed overall goals and strategies for each of the following:

• Land Use/Environment
• Economic Vitality
• Transportation
• Collaborative Government
• Education/Culture/Recreation
• Comprehensive Health Care
• Public Safety

Implementation

Any undertaking of this magnitude and importance requires the active participation of many groups and individuals from both the public and private sectors.  With this in mind, the respective Goal Area Task Forces have suggested key implementation organizations for each strategy.  To assure implementation, these organizations will be asked to embrace the respective strategies and commit to ensuring that they are successfully implemented.  In addition, the core Planning Group of twenty-four citizens has committed to meeting periodically to follow up on implementation activity, monitor results, and, as necessary, suggest corrective action to the County Commissioners, municipal governments, and/or other organizations that accept implementation responsibility.
