Sheriff Darren Campbell stated that on 3-17-17 Lt. C.L. Stone of the Aggressive Criminal Enforcement Team conducted a traffic stop on a 1997 model Chevrolet on I-40 near Highway 90 for traveling 84 M.P.H. in a 65 M.P.H. speed zone.  When Stone approached the vehicle he immediately recognized the driver, John R. Shoaf, 21, of Statesville from dealing with him in the past.  Stone also knew that Shoaf had a prior history of possessing illegal narcotics.  While issuing Shoaf a citation for speeding Stone questioned him about the possibility of there being illegal narcotics in his vehicle.  Shoaf denied having anything illegal, but denied Stone consent to search his vehicle.  Sgt. L.J. Hayes then walked his K-9 around the exterior of the vehicle and the K-9 gave a positive indication for the odor of narcotics.  During a search of the vehicle two bags were located.  One bag contained 4 grams of marijuana and the other bag contained 102 Xanax bars.  Shoaf was then placed under arrest and transported to the Iredell County Detention Center where he received a $40,000 bond.  Shoaf was already out on bond and currently on probation from previous charges.
