Job Opening - SWCD Education Coordinator


Job Title: Education Coordinator

Location: 444 Bristol Drive, Statesville, NC 28677

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: 
The candidate for the position of Education Coordinator should be a self-motivator with a strong administrative background, experience with presenting education programs, and a working knowledge of soil and water conservation.

 The Education Coordinator provides administrative and educational support to the programs of the Iredell Soil and Water Conservation District.

Skills required include: prepare independently routine correspondence and documents; establish and maintain schedules of administrative nature; collect and file data for periodic reports; and present education programs to Iredell County students.  The candidate is expected to represent the Iredell District Board at meetings and functions at their request.  A neat appearance, good manners, dependable attendance, and a genuine interest in people and their problems are essential to the proper performance of duties in this position.

Primary responsibilities of the candidate are to the Iredell Soil and Water Conservation District Board of Supervisors.  Daily supervision will be by the Iredell SWCD Department Head with administrative supervision from the Iredell SWCD Board.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Administrative

  • Provide assistance to visitors to the office, answer the telephone, take messages either in person or over the phone and get messages to the correct staff member, direct visitors to other offices as needed, and  assist visitors with aerial photos, soils CDs, soil sample boxes, topographic maps, and publications.
  • Accumulate necessary documents for monthly board meetings, prepare an agenda for review, and attend all board meetings.
  • Take minutes, finalize and route minutes of all meetings by e-mail or hard copy. 
  • Prepare supervisor expense vouchers and route required documents to the Division of Soil and Water Conservation. 
  • Inform supervisors of all correspondence received in the district office and of local, area, and state meetings.
  • Prepare and distribute Fiscal Year Annual Reports and a Fiscal Year Plan of Operation.
  • Produce and distribute electronically bi-annual newsletters. 
  • Update Iredell SWCD website content through the Iredell County IT department and keep up with the www.iredellswcd.org domain yearly registration.
  • Update Iredell SWCD property list as items are purchased or discarded.
  • Plan and coordinate meetings and events as needed.
  • Maintain District files.
  • Operate a variety of office machines.
  • Attend area, state and regional meetings, workshops, and training sessions as needed.
  • Distribute incoming mail and assemble outgoing mail.
  • Purchase supplies for the office.
  • Assist Department Head with District correspondence.
  • Maintain appearance of the work area.

Education

  • Visit Iredell-Statesville School System, Mooresville Graded School District, homeschools, and private schools and present programs for K-12th Grade, as requested. 
  • Coordinate and plan new educational programs. 
  • Converse with individual teachers, principals, public information officers, curriculum coordinators, etc. about available Iredell SWCD education programs and contests.
  • Coordinate Iredell County level yearly conservation contests:  Poster Contest for 3rd – 6th grade (individual contests for each grade), Essay Contest for 6th grade, Computer Designed Slide Show Contest for 6th grade, Public Speaking/Speech Contests for 7th – 8th grade (individual contests for each grade) and Computer Designed Poster Contest for 9th Grade; recruit participation, give programs about contest topic, distribute awards, and assist with Area contests.
  • Recruit Iredell County teams for the Southern Piedmont Envirothon (Area VIII) and the North Carolina State Envirothon; attend Area VIII Envirothon meetings, aid in team study sessions, reviews area tests, and other duties, as needed.
  • Promote and recruit students to attend the Resource Conservation Workshop. 
  • Assist teachers, parents, and students with questions about curriculum, projects, standard course of study, etc.
  • Offer programs for Camp Iredell Summer Programs, as requested.
  • Coordinate Iredell SWCD Fair Booth, as requested by Board.
  • Purchase education supplies for programs and contests.
  • Prepare education budget.
  • Coordinate Environmental Field Day for 5th Graders with Iredell-Statesville School System; secure site, seek funding, recruit presenters, publicize event, finalize attendees, and provide supplies and food for the event.
  • Prepare and submit newspaper articles and Facebook posts about education programs.
  • Assist with surrounding county contests, field days, etc., as needed.


OTHER DUTIES:

  • There will be other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Position requires a high school diploma
  • An Associate Degree or BS Degree is preferred, especially in Environmental Education
  • A valid driver’s license is required
  • Position requires some overnight travel for meetings and training.

The Iredell Soil & Water Conservation District is not an Iredell County Agency although it is funded by Iredell County and follows the Iredell County Personnel Policy Manual.  Medical, Dental and Life Insurance along with a monthly IRA contribution will be provided by the District.
